Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is something I was asked to cover by the UN a while back but after some discussion it was decided it was too difficult to get the images so the project was left. But when I was in Kibera’s far corners in Hugumoini village in an area known as Southlands on Saturday to photograph a community clean up I found myself in a position right there as it spontaneously happened right in front of me. With so many people living in such close proximity and in such squalor it’s never long between dramatic events which often are incredibly horrific.  On Saturday I was photographing people scraping the open sewage and waste drains that run through the centre of every street and dumping that dark black stinking mess into the huge rubbish pit they usually visit to dump their household waste. As I was walking a fight broke out between a couple just ahead of me. Serious scratching and tousling and screaming and beating. For around 2 minutes. It didn’t feel right or safe to bring my camera up to my face to photograph them so I shot 2 frames from my hip. The fight ended abruptly both of them were breathless and shaking. I shot one more frame as the man turned to walk away, everyone staring despite it being a usual occurrence in these parts. The physicality of the fighting was brutal but seemed even between the man and the woman. I didn’t find out what they were arguing about it, it would have helped me understand more, but it is was a personal, intimate and raw moment between these 2 people I have to say I was didn’t feel safe to go anywhere near it.

Lens Blog, The New York Times – A Moment in Time

The New York Times Lens Blog asked photographers — both amateur and professional — to capture a moment in time at precisely 15:00 GMT (11:00 a.m. ET) today. The idea is to “create an international mosaic, an astonishingly varied gallery of images that are cemented together by the common element of time.” This was my Moment in Time by Georgina Goodwin.

The Power of Black & White

I don’t normally shoot in Black & White, in fact I hardly ever photograph in B&W. This one is a rare venture for me but it invokes massive depth and the contrast is delicious. I have to say I pretty much love this photo ~

So I’m sharing it with you here….

Photo of the Night :: Nairobi Highlights

This is a photo I took whilst stuck in traffic in Nairobi, near Kenyatta Ave – Uhuru Highway roundabout. I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw this man at the back of the Citi Hoppa bus, his silhouette coming through the back window from all the surrounding car lights…….

Nyeri War Cemetery – Mt. Kenya

Driving back from a weekend in Nanyuki I stopped only for a very short time sadly at the Nyeri War Cemetery which is on the Naro Moro to Nanyuki road from Karatina to Nyeri. To find it on google maps click here. Nyeri War Cemetery contains 368 Commonwealth burials and commemorations of the Second World War. Apparently according to this link, 4 of the burials are unidentified and one soldier is commemorated by a special memorial. The cemetery also contains 2 non-war burials and 1 French war grave. 9 Italian graves have been removed.

3 general hospitals were built at Nyeri during the Second World War but only 2 were used; 1 by the military authorities and the other for the Italian refugees and prisoners of war held in the area. The burials in the war cemetery were made from these hospitals. If you have any history connect this you can even Find A Grave

So here with stunning evening sunshine are a very few photos I took in the 10 mins I was there….

Panorama from Dadaab Refugee Camps

Here is a panorama of a food distribution done by the Turkish Red Cross. You can see people running frantically to join the already incredibly long queue – such is the dire situation these refugees from Somalia find themselves in every day, never knowing when their next food supply or meal may come. For those of you who don’t know Dadaab is the largest refugee camp in the world situated on the Kenya-Somali border and has around 464,000 refugees, 115,000 of which arrived last year due to drought.

This is actually 4 images stitched together … Hardly worth putting the image on here as WordPress seems to have to squeeeeeeze the panoramic into a tiny space and won’t let it spread to show it true glory…. Sigh.
